Virginia Bottomley comments on the representation of women on FTSE 100 boards

In the article “Will women ever win the board game?” published in the Telegraph on 26th December 2010, Virginia Bottomley, chair of the board practice at Odgers Berndtson commented that “London’s widely recognised status as a centre for international business naturally results in a large number of non-UK people, including women occupying FTSE board positions.  Interestingly, although the FTSE 100 is an index of the largest UK companies, 75pc of these companies’ revenues are earned overseas which has implications for board composition.”

Virginia believes that UK boardrooms can learn from the US where many women have achieved the top rung of the ladder, and many hold non-executive positions.  She also believes that British women could seek to work overseas and learn foreign languages to increase their potential.
