Despite the economic downturn there are many flagship infrastructure projects in the pipeline for the UK. Some of these including Crossrail, the M25 Widening, the Thames Tideway and London Gateway are already in progress. Others including new-build nuclear power, Heathrow's third runway and the Severn Barrage are still at the planning stage. There are also numerous new-build projects in progress throughout the UK, driven by the low-carbon agenda, in wind, wave, biomass, etc. On top of this an ongoing programme of renewal work, particularly in road, rail and water, provide a base load of civil engineering activity across the country. In summary, although few sectors are totally immune from economic downturn, the UK infrastructure sector is set fair to weather the "perfect storm".
