Founded in 1888, The Football League is the world’s original league football competition and is the template for leagues the world over. With 72 member clubs across England and Wales, it is also the largest single body of professional clubs in European football and is responsible for administering and regulating the Coca-Cola Football League, the Carling Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, as well as reserve and youth football. Crowds for Football League matches are currently at their highest levels for 50 years with more than 16 million fans attending matches in each of the last five seasons. The Football League is a major partner in the running of professional football in this country and a key responsibility of the Chairman is representing The League and influencing the future of the game at the very highest levels. The Chairman’s position is an executive role requiring a time commitment of three days a week. A small, highly focussed and professional management team will report to the Chairman.The Role
• To chair the Board and to lead the 72 Clubs in an effective manner.
• To take executive responsibility for the management of The League including Operations, Commercial, Finance, Legal and External Relations.
• To further the reputation, image and activities of The League and be its major representative in the world of football both nationally and internationally.
The Candidate:
• An individual of real stature and ability with experience of leading complex organisations.
• An excellent communicator used to influencing stakeholders including partner organisations and Government.
• A demonstrable interest in football and an understanding of the relevant business aspects of the game.
