Civil Service - Diversity & Equality Awards 2010

Odgers Berndtson, proud sponsors of the civil service diversity & equality awards.

Our positive engagement with Diversity is fundamental to our thinking, our process and our delivery. These values are strengthened by the successes of our business and by the steps we continue to take towards achieving a model of continued best practice. We are embracing our role as an advocate of Diversity as a means of enriching our own organisation, and those with whom we work. We seek to verify our commitment with quantifiable evidence: we believe in action over words.

Where are we now?

Our thinking

  • We are committed to our Diversity Vision and believe that this must be translated into action and built into our business activities.

Our process

  • Diversity is integral to the mainstream recruitment process we undertake for our clients. We build Diversity into the client briefing by offering guidance on current legislation and questioning existing practices; when agreeing the Job Description we provide advice on selection criteria to ensure objectivity; when agreeing advertisements we ensure accurate role representation and full compliance with legislation, and advise clients on the most appropriate media.
  • Throughout the search process, we draw on the diverse experience of colleagues to bring a creative approach, engaging with our international network and benefiting from our excellent relationships with the organisations that represent the diversity of interests in today's society.
  • All candidates are duly treated with equal respect. When analysing candidate suitability we apply the best methods of assessment to guarantee fair and open competition, and provide advice to our clients on best practice to ensure unbiased interviews and selection procedures.

Our delivery

  • We have an established Diversity Council which has encouraged our Diversity policies to take root throughout the firm. In addition to policy making, the Council develops strategies for communicating our plans and principles to all our colleagues. The council is both an open and interactive forum for debate and a mechanism for putting plans into action.
  • We continue to offer our staff guidance on current legislation and ensure our consultants and researchers have access to up to date information in regard to equal opportunities practice and legislation. Through our statutory obligations we believe we have the opportunity to think creatively and deliver innovative results.
  • We hold regular Diversity working lunches with guest speakers to debate current issues, progress our thinking on best practice and inspire and motivate colleagues.
  • We comment in the media on Diversity in leadership.

Ongoing commitment

  • We have already embarked on an ongoing firm-wide exercise to gather data concerning our internal diversity profile.
  • We regularly analyse statistics regarding the candidates we present at short list and those who we place, guaranteeing absolute confidentiality.
  • We are continuing to build links and partnerships with organisations that engage in equality and minority issues.
  • We are members of Race for Opportunity
